What is a Phonetic Alphabet?

Phonetic alphabets assign code words to letters (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie...) to ensure clear communication, especially over radio or telephone where letters can sound similar. Different organizations developed their own versions throughout history.

NATO/ICAO - The Modern Standard

Adopted by NATO in 1956 and later by ICAO and ITU, the NATO phonetic alphabet is the worldwide standard for aviation, military, and international communication. Words were chosen for clarity across different languages and accents.

Historical Variants

Before NATO standardization, different organizations used their own alphabets. The US military used "Able Baker" (1941-1956), the RAF had multiple versions, and Western Union developed their own for telegraphy using city names like Adams, Boston, Chicago.

Common Uses Today

Aviation, military, emergency services, customer support, and IT helpdesks all use phonetic alphabets. They're essential for spelling serial numbers, confirmation codes, email addresses, or any information where accuracy is critical.
