Frequently Asked Questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. All compression happens in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device, ensuring complete privacy.
What is the maximum file size?
The maximum is 2 GB, limited by WebAssembly memory constraints. For files over 500 MB, compression may use significant browser memory. For very large files, try our server-based video converter.
What is the difference between Quality and Target Size mode?
Quality mode uses CRF (Constant Rate Factor) encoding - you pick a quality level and the encoder decides the bitrate needed. Target Size mode calculates a specific video bitrate to hit your desired file size, which may result in more variable quality depending on the video content.
Why is WebM compression slower than MP4?
WebM uses the VP9 codec which is more computationally intensive to encode, especially in a browser environment. MP4 with H.264 is significantly faster for in-browser compression. Choose MP4 if speed is a priority.
Why is the output file larger than the original?
This can happen when the original video is already heavily compressed or uses a very efficient codec. Try a more aggressive quality preset, lower the resolution, or remove the audio track for additional savings.
Is this tool really free?
Yes, completely free with no limitations. Since all processing happens in your browser, there are no server costs. No watermarks, no account required, and no rate limits.
